For Immediate Release:
ORLANDO FL, 4/4/18 – Two Honor Roll students from Maynard Evans High School in Pine Hills, will embark on a life-changing journey to Ghana, West Africa on Tuesday 4/17. The all-expenses paid trip is sponsored by 98.5 THE WIRE, and will include tours of the Abeadze Kyeakor Village, and the Slave Castles of Cape Coast.
Paul Allen Billings of 98.5 THE WIRE says it’s been at the top of his bucket list to see to it that students from the area get a chance to accompany him to West Africa, a trip he has made many times, saying, “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s speech, ‘The Birth of a New Nation’ was inspired after King visited Ghana, and I wouldn’t be surprised if these students return from Africa with ideas to help change their communities as well.”
According to Billings, the only thing the students were asked to contribute towards the trip is the promise to utilize what they’ve learned upon their return to help make Pine Hills a better place.
“Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.” – Maya Angelou
Brandan Louis and Kandra Pope are part of the mentorship program at 98.5 THE WIRE and this trip is the reward they have earned for their hard work in school and in the community.
These students will be joined by five (5) teenagers from Muskegon, Michigan, who are being sponsored by 98.5 THE WIRE’s sister station – 103.7 The Beat.
