Marcus Garvey (1)

Marcus Garvey: Civil Rights Activist (1887–1940)
Jamaican-born Marcus Garvey was a public speaker for the Black Nationalism and Pan-African Movements. He later founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association in 1912 and the African Communities League. Garvey’s Pan-African philosophies sparked a global mass movement called Garveyism, on which the principles of many modern African nations are based. The principles and values of Garveyism would eventually inspire other groups like the Nation of Islam and the Rastafari movement. His contributions to the Black Nationalism and Pan-African Movements are numerous, as he aimed to end imperialist rule and create independent societies in Africa.
