CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Music is just one key into the African American portal of understanding one another.
St. Matthew Baptist Church youth choir said, “that’s love.”
But so is preaching.
“It’s preaching time I said it’s preaching time, yes,” said St. Matthew Baptist Church Sr. Pastor Arthur Lane.
Now while preaching is not exclusive to those with African ancestry. There are studies like this one from the pew research center showing that Black Americans are more religious than the overall general population.
“James Cone had said, he’s the God of the oppressed and so as oppressed people, we’ve always leaned on God, we’ve always leaned on our faith” said Lane.
Many times in this life–that’s all you can depend on.
“We recall history, we recall how the Lord has blessed us through many years, many generations so we embrace that,” said St. Matthew Baptist Church Education Minister Randy Colvin.
Now the motto that the church is carrying through 2025 supports those findings from the pew research center.
“We believe that God has called us to be a multiethnic and multigenerational church,” said Lane. “With an emphasis on this year that generations matter to the future of our church.”
Age is also believed to play a factor in the study.
“Whether they’re young, middle aged, or seniors they’re all connected and they can all see how Christ and how God is working in their life,” said Colvin.
Once again, generations matter.
“Youth and young adults rather they don’t really have a say so in church and so it’s always a good deal to get them involved, keep them active,” said Youth Minister Marlon Chambers.
“Whether it’s reading a scripture or singing a song we want their voices to be heard.”
