Black Americans take center stage at Kenosha museum talk – kenoshanews.com

Retired Judge Derek Mosley addresses the more than 50 people who attended his talk on “More Things You Didn’t Learn in History Class” his ongoing lecture series that shines a line on the accomplishments of Black people in America whose contributions and stories have gone largely unnoticed and untaught in most history classes. The event was held Tuesday night at the Kenosha Civil War Museum.
A painting depicting the expedition of explorers Lewis and Clark with Sacagawea, their indigenous guide, shows Clark’s slave, York, who was as much an explorer in his own right. The painting is often seen in texts without York, according to retired Judge Derek Mosley, who discussed the significant contributions of Black Americans Tuesday night as part of his presentation for the Courageous Conversations series held Tuesday night at the Kenosha Civil War Museum.
Park Ranger Bettie Reid Soskin the oldest ranger to be hired of the U.S. National Park Service was 102 years old when she retired. Soskin joined at age of 86 as the park system planned to establish a park memorializing the millions of women who worked in factories during World War II. Soskin was among them and as an African American woman wanted to ensure the park service also knew about the 600,000 “Black Rosies” who also mobilized.
From an abolitionist whose lifetime spanned nine decades of U.S. presidents to Grafton’s role in the blues, the history of Black Americans hasn’t always been told, a Kenosha speaker said Tuesday.
