MARYLAND – Continuing our Black History Month journey, Wor- Wic Community College will be hosting a Black History gospel concert to show how the black spirituality and gospel music have inspired movements.
Prayer, Protest & Progress
Gospel music has guided protests and political movements according to Wor Wic Community College Cultural Diversity Chair Dr. Kimberly Purvis. “The church is at the core of our roots. That is where we have always found safety… Music has played such an important role in the Black community. When times have been tough, we have always relied on our faith- and our faith comes along with the music that we share. ”
Movements through Music
She says church music has always kept Black Americans grounded. “There are times in our history where we could not verbally communicate our story, or communicate our wishes, so we used song… Regardless of what atrocities that have happened, we have always been able to hold on to our faith.” That’s what College officials are hoping a gospel concert at the school will help showcase.
Malcom to Martin
Dr. Purvis saying from Martin to Malcolm, civil rights leaders have come from all types of spiritual backgrounds. “At the end of the day whether its Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, it is saying there’s something bigger than me… We want people to know that Wor-Wic Community College is embracing our whole community.”
The Black History Gospel Concert will take place Friday, February 28 at 6:00 pm in the Guerrieri Hall Auditorium at Wor- Wic Community College. It is open and free to the public. If you would like more information on the University or other events they have to offer, please visit their website.
