OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – In the heart of Omaha’s black community, Joyfest is a celebration of culture and heritage. Part of that celebration includes the musical performances.
Renzellous Brown is a part of the Omaha-based music collective, Reinbow, who’s performing at Saturday’s festival.
The band first came together in March of 2024. Using their influences in classical, jazz, indie rock, gospel, they strive to showcase their music through Black American music traditions.
Their mission is to uplift Black, Indigenous, Queer, and diff-abled voices in their music. During pride month, Juneteenth and Black Music month, Brown says that couldn’t be more important.
“If it wasn’t for the black, queer, plus-sized, differently abled, and formerly incarcerated peoples that created this music that we know as black American music and that influence of black Americans and black queer people especially have influenced genres like blues, jazz rock and roll, pop, we wouldn’t be a thing,” says Brown. “I wouldn’t have this need to always do my best and even also just do enough because I know my ancestors before me paved the way for me.”
The fifth annual Juneteenth Joyfest kicks off Saturday at the Union for Contemporary Art at 2423 North 24th Street.
There will be live music, poetry, youth performances, Black flea market vendors, crafts visual art, food, and much more.
Tickets are on sale now on the Joyfest website.
