Here are some chances to celebrate Black History Month in Evansville – Courier & Press

EVANSVILLE — February is Black History Month, and multiple organizations in Evansville are offering the community ways to celebrate.
Here are some options around the city.
Family Reunion Karaoke will take place Feb. 5 at the Fireside Lounge in University Center East. This will be a part of homecoming activities put on by the Multicultural Center.
For sports lovers, the Feb. 6 USI basketball games vs. Little Rock will include a Black History Month celebration. The women’s game is at 5 p.m. and the men’s game at 7:30 p.m. According to the university, USI Athletics will recognize be National Pan-Hellenic Council organizations, the USI Multicultural Center, as well as Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry.
Feb. 11, the True Black History Museum will be set up at USI. A traveling museum that teaches Black history, the museum “is committed to preserving the history of African Americans and teaching individuals about the many great contributions that African Americans have made throughout history.”
The public can come out to USI to see the museum for no charge.   
The Multicultural Center will host a Black History Roundtable Feb. 13 in the Traditions Lounge in University Center East.
Feb. 17 in Carter Hall the Black Student Union and Activities Programming Board will host their annual “Taste of Film” event. Attendees will be able to watch a movie while eating foods inspired by the culture depicted on the screen.
The Black Student Union will hold a gala Feb. 28. The theme will be Harlem Nights, and a location is still to be decided.
St. John’s East UCC will host its annual Black History program at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 16 at 7000 Lincoln Ave. The guest speaker will be Indiana State Rep. Alex Burton.
The Evansville African American Museum will host its annual Unity Concert at 6 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Victory Theater.
Under the direction of Rev. James Hamler, the concert will focus on the theme of love and justice.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online from the EAAM website.
All day, and every day during regular hours at Oaklyn Library there will be activities set up in the children’s area to help kids learn about Black History Month. Oaklyn is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
At 4:00 p.m. Feb. 3 the North Park library branch will host a viewing of Pixar’s Soul, during which kids can make a popsicle stick instrument.
For students in Kindergarten through fifth grade, there will be opportunities to learn more about famous Black scientists. Registration is required for these events and can be done online at evpl.com.
The events are hosted at EVPL Red Bank. Feb. 3 kids will be able to learn about Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Feb. 18 will focus on June Bacon-Bercey. Both events are from 4 to 5 p.m.
At 4 p.m. Feb. 11, Red Bank will host an event where kids can learn to make abstract art in the style of Alma Thomas, and graffiti-style art like Jean-Michael Basquiat.
The adult book club meetup at at Oaklyn will take place from 3 to 4 p.m. Feb. 18 and focus on “The Swans of Harlem” by Karen Valby.
Another chance to see Pixar’s Soul is set for 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 19 at EVPL West. The family paint and sip event will allow attendees to create art while watching the movie.
Watez G. Phelps Sr., former University of Evansville African American Alumni Association President, will hold a presentation called “Desegregation and Busing in Evansville” from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Feb. 25 at Central Library.
February LGBTQ+ Adult Book Club at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 26 at Haynie’s Corner Brew Co. will focus on Samantha Irby’s. “Wow, No Thank You.”
Anyone interested in cooking and cookbooks can come out to Central Library for its cookbook club. The event will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Feb. 27 with “Jubilee” by Toni Tipton-Martin as the selection.
