CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Black History Month continues to shed light on so many prominent African Americans who’ve called Chattanooga home.
We spoke with Mayor Tim Kelly about why this is the month to celebrate that and recognize their great contributions to our culture.
When we reflect on the Chattanoogans who have made significant impacts on history, many of them are prominent African Americans—from Bessie Smith to Usher, Samuel L. Jackson, and Clyde Stubblefield, James Brown’s legendary drummer.
Mayor Tim Kelly says this represents “a truly rich thread of our history,” and he hopes it continues to grow in the future.
One area that Mayor Tim Kelly wants to focus on expanding is the need for a resource center for those looking to start their business and entrepreneurship journey.
Several events are happening throughout the month, including Lift Every Voice, a celebration of black spirituals, and the black art lounge on feb 19th.
There will also be a Q&A at the National Medal of Honor Heritage Center on Monday, February 16th.
