Ohio University Chillicothe will host a Black History Month program on Feb. 20 focused on African American labor.
The event, held in conjunction with the Chillicothe and Ross County Public Library and the Ross County Chapter of the NAACP, will begin with a meet and greet at 6:30 p.m., according to an announcement from Ohio University.
Visitors can view art on display at the Patricia Scott Memorial Art Gallery in Bennett Hall and enjoy light refreshments outside the Bennett Hall Auditorium. The program will start at 7 p.m. in the auditorium, featuring music from the Unified Choir and an African drum and dance performance by Dr. Tanya Price.
Dr. Uzoma Miller, assistant professor of African American Studies at Ohio University, will present a talk titled “Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters Humanized and Made Visible: Commemorating the Intersections of Black History and Labor.”
Ohio University will celebrate Black History Month throughout February. The university will host lectures, exhibits, presentations and events aimed at encouraging the study of Black American history while focusing on the 2025 national theme of “African Americans and Labor,” which honors the past while exploring the legacy of African Americans and their historical experiences related to labor.
Students, staff, alumni and community residents are invited to attend Black History Month activities.
