Preserving, acknowledging the American history that most won't find in history books – KSDK.com

MISSOURI, USA — Countless stories trace the lives of descendants of those forcibly taken from Africa and brought to America centuries ago. These narratives not only illuminate the deep connections between past and present, but they also reveal a legacy of resilience and determination that has endured through the ages.

As the late poet Maya Angelou once said, “You can’t really know where you are going until you know where you’ve been.” The journey forward requires a profound understanding of our history, but uncovering that history is no easy task. This is why, every year since Gerald R. Ford’s presidency, each U.S. president—through to Joe Biden—has issued statements honoring the spirit and significance of Black History Month.
The story of Black America is still being written. These are just a few of the powerful stories 5 On Your Side has covered in recent years, each one shedding light on an unbroken thread of resilience and legacy.
