The star of the series This Is Us, Sterling K. Brown, has officially joined the global online community Black Scottish TikTok. His presence and gesture brought new light to the community, and his wife’s recent post highlighted for followers the hashtag #BlackScottishTikTok, which quickly gained popularity.
In the United States, ties between Black communities have intensified: Black Americans have begun to see Scottish Black people as kin, while several Scottish influencers are expanding their audience by sharing their experiences of living in Scotland.
The influencer Torgi Svair, who goes by the pseudonym “starboysobersfitness”, received an award for raising awareness about the Black Scottish community and for blending the Scottish accent with the resonance of acting culture from the film Paradise.
Brown’s wife, actress Ryan Michelle Bates, recently posted on social media: “My husband has been speaking in a Scottish accent all day. Please send help and a kilt.”
“My husband has been speaking in a Scottish accent all day. Please send help and a kilt.”
Later she winked at the audience with another addition: “Okay! Don’t say that I’ve never given you anything”; in the caption for the TikTok video featuring her husband in a Scottish style appeared: “ScotsKBrown, you’ve got another nickname! #cousins #blackangus.”
In the frame, they also discussed why he often chooses Black actresses and actors for roles on screen; many people noted that he is often mistaken for Isaiah Washington from Grey’s Anatomy.
“I like that now everyone is dissecting who I work with on screen… all of my wives are Black.”
Not only Brown joined the topic: Roy Wood Jr., co-host of CNN Have I Got News for You, recently posted about a trip to Scotland with a wish to find local influencers.
Upon arriving, he shot a TikTok with Torgi Svair and captioned the post: “It was really a pleasure to travel through this beautiful country and talk with several Scottish content creators, both men and women. I can’t wait for the full clip to be published later this week. @Starboy|Fitness #blackscottish #blackscottishtiktok.”
Later he posted a video of a talk with another Scottish influencer.
This mini broadcast on social media highlighted a new format of interaction between the American diaspora and Scottish society: language, style, and influencer impact shape how cultural identity is portrayed in the media.
“It was truly a pleasure to travel this beautiful country and to converse with several Scottish content creators, both men and women.”
