Vince Staples says the Jan. 6 insurrection would have look much different if Black people had stormed the U.S. Capitol.
The infamous riot occurred on Jan. 6, 2021, before former president Joe Biden took office and was led by supporters of President Donald Trump after he served his first term. While the attempt to stage a coup was unsuccessful, it led to arrests for thousands of individuals (most of whom have been pardoned) and several deaths.
Staples was on tour during the riot, which he shared with comedian and internet personality Ziwe on the Monday (Dec. 8) episode of her web series.
"We were watching on the bus. It was amazing," the Dark Times rapper told Ziwe.
"I want us to do that," he continued, referring to Black Americans. "And we would do better because they were just ugly. Like, the problem with revolution is that it will be photographed. So sloppy loose T-shirts, nobody got a pump, nobody drunk their cayenne and their lemon. It's just not beautiful."
On the unsightly scene, Staples added, "So you're fighting the government and you look like shit."
"So when you die, it's for nothing. Did you see the lady that got shot?" he asked Ziwe. "Disgusting wardrobe. Terrible-ass moments."
In Staples' opinion, if Black people attempted to overthrow the government with their own Jan. 6 riot, they'd look "Met Gala amazing."
"Wales Bonner everywhere, you know?" he concluded, referring to the English luxury brand.
The Jan. 6 insurrection took place after Trump held a "Save America" rally, where his supporters turned on law enforcement and stormed the Capitol. In January of this year, Trump granted clemency for 1,500 individuals who were involved and dubbed them "hostages."
"These people have been destroyed," said Trump, according to BBC. "What they've done to these people is outrageous. There's rarely been anything like it in the history of our country."
