During a Veterans Day week in which Black military service was being dishonored with erasure, I sifted through the contents of a manila envelope to learn more about my father’s military service.

The Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial is a World War II military burial ground near Margraten in the southernmost part of the Netherlands. The cemetery is the only American one in the Netherlands and was dedicated in 1960.
