After dating for four years and having a child together, Nipsey Hussle and Lauren London have called it quits. The West Coast rapper broke the news via his Twitter page, and it caused a lot of conversation.
“@LaurenLondon and I had a dope relationship and made a beautiful child,” wrote Nipsey. “We are deciding to separate and raise our son together as the main priority. This was a mutual choice and we will function with each other as family with love and respect.”
While many said they were sad that Nipsey and the actress parted ways, the former “Love & Hip-Hop Hollywood” star Masika Kalysha threw some shade. At least that’s how some may interpret her tweet.
“Do gangsta rappers announce breakups?” she asked.
Afterwards, Nipsey shot back and asked a question of his own. “Do reality TV throw aways get to question bosses?” he wrote.
Whether one cares about Masika’s tweet or not, it does seem that a growing number of rappers, especially those considered to be gangsta rappers, are being more open about their relationships. Like Meek Mill, for example.
Back in 2015, he was extremely candid about his feelings for his then-girlfriend Nicki Minaj. He also shared romantic photos and talked to the press about how she made him feel.
Some might say this is a major shift since hip-hop has often shunned monogamy, and rappers wore their player badges as proudly as they wore their gold chains.
One could attribute this change to hip-hop simply getting older, and for the first time we’re seeing prominent rappers -who are still relevant and considered cool- talk about finding love.
Even JAY-Z, arguably the most famous rapper in the world, who’s also built a reputation of being a stone-cold playboy, made a huge shift.
On his critically acclaimed “4:44” album, the Roc Nation co-founder shed the bravado and talked about Beyoncé being his soulmate and his struggle to do right by her. Remember, this is the same guy who wouldn’t admit for years that he was even dating Bey when they first got together.
So the question now is, has hip-hop moved a little bit past the “We don’t love them ho–” mantra that was popularized in the ’90s? It’ll be interesting to see. But for now, here are five rappers who’ve expressed love for their mates freely and very publicly.
Ludacris
Ludacris and Eudoxie Mbouguiengue tied the knot in 2014, and since then he’s been doing all kinds of romantic things for her. He’s also been showering her with lavish gifts.
On top of that, Luda shared the details of his marriage proposal with the press and admitted that he’s a big old romantic softy.
“I had written in the grass her name and ‘will you marry me?’” he told Ellen DeGeneres. “So once she saw it and we looped around, of course she burst out into tears and was just extremely happy. So it was a pretty original idea.”
21 Savage
While it might not be surprising that Ludacris would be so open about his feelings since he was in his late 30s when he popped the question, some might be surprised that 21 Savage, who’s only 25, expressed his love for Amber Rose so publicly. The two have been dating since earlier this year.
A lot of people also seemed shocked that 21 has such a romantic side considering his image as a no-nonsense street rapper.
“I’m so happy I met you,” he told Rose while they were driving. “You’re beautiful even when you ain’t trying to be.”
After the video surfaced, the “Rockstar” rapper received backlash and was called “soft” by some people, which he responded to.
“N—- really think a man expressing his feelings to a girl is soft, but y’all will tell the n—- who gon’ snitch on you you love him everyday,” he wrote.

Gucci Mane
To say that Gucci has undergone a complete transformation would be a colossal sized understatement. Since going back to prison in 2013 and coming out three years later, he’s shed a lot of weight, stopped doing drugs and has fallen in love with the entrepreneur and model Keyshia Ka’oir, who he married in October.
In fact, Guwop gushed about Ka’oir in his book “The Autobiography of Gucci Mane.” The pair met after he saw Ka’oir in the video for Drake and Timbaland’s song “Say Something” while still in jail.
“After we wrapped up I practically begged her to stay an extra night in Atlanta so I could take her to dinner,” Gucci wrote. “I’d done nothing but work since I got out of jail and this seemed like a break worth taking. She agreed … I took her hand as we left the restaurant. The whole situation was out of character for me. I knew she was special.”
Papoose
Has there ever been a rapper who showed so much loyalty to his wife like Papoose?
The Brooklyn MC has never hid the fact that he’s head over heels for Remy Ma, and he stood by her side while she spent six years in prison for assault.
Papoose and Remy have also become a walking billboard for a happy hip-hop marriage, and they often shout “Black love” during events, which seems to be a call for others in rap to celebrate family and healthy relationships.
Jim Jones
Whether it was on “Love & Hip-Hop: New York” or the show “Jim & Chrissy Vow or Never,” Jim Jones has always spoken openly about his love for Chrissy Lampkin.
While doing press for “Vow or Never,” the Dipset rapper explained why he loves his woman so much, and it has to do with how closely they relate to each other. Jim also said that Chrissy has been there for him in the bleakest of moments.
“I’ve been in this game a long time and we both came up in the streets of Harlem and we see what life can do to people, from the street aspect and the industry,” he explained. “She’s talked me off the ledge on numerous occasions.”
