James Baldwin’s ‘I Am Not Your Negro’ trailer released

James Baldwin‘s documentary, “I Am Not Your Negro,” has just dropped its trailer.

The documentary is based on Raoul Peck’s final, unfinished book, Remember This House, which was supposed to focus on both the lives and the deaths of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. and the way they were entwined. The book was never finished, but Baldwin dove into the existing pages as well as the pages of history to produce the documentary.

“I Am Not Your Negro” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and received rave reviews for its insightful commentary on race. What’s more, Odie Henderson applauded the documentary for “masterfully syncing Baldwin’s words to a series of images that bind past and present” in the Village Voice.

“The story of the Negro in America is the story of America,” Samuel L. Jackson says in the trailer for the documentary, adding, “It is not a pretty story.”
