Black-ish creator Kenya Barris is reportedly set to write for a new Russell Simmons biopic called Life And Def: Sex Drugs Money + God.

The film will not only chronicle Simmon’s rise to stardom from the streets to become one of the most influential music and fashion icons in his time, but will also chronicle the rise of rap and hip-hop in the United States.

It will focus on the rebellious and disruptive influence that was Simmons and Def Jam Records, with artists like L.L. Cool J, Public Enemy, and the Beastie Boys and then later JAY-Z, Kanye West, and DMX joining the ranks.

The project is part of a deal signed by Barris and his production company, Khalabo Ink Society, last year with Fox. As part of the deal, Barris and Khalabo Ink Society will look to tell compelling stories and produce films that examine parts of our society and our history that often are untouched by mainstream media.

The co-production between Simmons’ Def Pictures and Misher Films will see both Simmons and Kevin Misher producing, with Jake Stein, Bobby Shriver, Josh Bratman and Andy Berman executive producing.
